Blizzard Entertainment faces a threat from Major League Baseball over a trademark application for its new Overwatch League logo for the popular Overwatch videogame. After Blizzard’s trademark application passed through the review process with the USPTO, MLB filed for an Extension of Time to Oppose the trademark, giving itself 90 days to confer with its attorneys and consider the matter; the extended deadline to file an Opposition ends on July 26.

Although the silhouette and colors have been changed to match the style and art of the Overwatch game, there is an obvious inspiration and resemblance between the two that does not take much imagination to see. The main question is now whether there’s enough of a connection that consumers will be confused by the logo and wrongly perceive a relation between the Overwatch League mark and MLB. If successful, MLB could force Blizzard to change the logo or enter into a joint agreement for the use of the logo.
