Almost always. Gathering user data has long been a priority, but new privacy protections from app marketplaces and governments make it urgent to tell users how your app handles their data. Apple's App Store and Google Play both ask for a privacy policy link, and publishing without one can get an app suspended from the store, or worse, lead to legal trouble.
A privacy policy explains how your company handles its users' data. If you build a SaaS app or any software that collects personal details, put a privacy policy in place before you publish.
| Section | What it tells users |
|---|---|
| Data you collect | Personal details, device identifiers, location and usage data |
| How you use it | Running the app, support, analytics and marketing |
| Who you share it with | Service providers, analytics and advertising SDKs, and when the law requires it |
| Tracking and cookies | Identifiers used for tracking and how users can opt out |
| Security and retention | How the data is protected and how long it is kept |
| User rights | How users can access, correct or delete their data |
| Children | Whether the app is meant for children and how their data is handled |
| Changes and contact | How you announce updates and how to reach you |
A template is a solid starting point when your app collects ordinary account and usage data. A generator fills in blanks but rarely matches what your app actually does. If you handle health, financial or children's data, sell to enterprises, or operate in the EU, have an attorney tailor the policy to your data practices.
Yes. Send the short form and the Word template opens right after. It is a starting point, not legal advice.
Often, yes, if it accurately covers the data both collect. Many companies publish one policy that names each product it applies to.
Apple asks every app for a privacy policy link, and even a simple policy that says what you do not collect helps users and reviewers. If you use analytics or advertising SDKs, you are probably collecting more than you think.
Whenever your data practices change, such as a new SDK, feature or market, and review it at least once a year.
